Is the Fall A&P on the chopping block with corporate? It happens every year about this time. Get your staff together and try for creative ideas costing (or revenue producing) little. No use getting upset. The staff will notice and morale will plummet. You set the tone; they will follow. Have a great weekend!

Schedule a lunch next week with one of the top sellers from across the street. Schedule a lunch like this every week this month. Get to know the people preventing you from hitting your goals.

This week is the key revenue week for making this month's budget; are you going to sell all of your prime inventory this week, or did your sellers and sales managers mentally check out last month for the rest of summer?

Get to the office an hour early today, check the calendars of five random A/Es and one sales manager to see if people did a good job of scheduling calls for this week. If not, no one goes home until they have the minimum number of calls required to be scheduled this week. You are guaranteed to lose the month without a major amount of activity this week.

After setting up budget plans for 2009 last week, it's time to set goals for your department heads. Many GMs don't share numbers with staff. I'm NOT one of them. Give them their 2008 actual to date and make them accountable. Their jobs will be more responsible, and you will have time to do more important things. Like make sales calls.
