All this week we are discussing, "expenses I would like to see return to radio stations." Did you ever hear the phrase, "we are going to keep cutting salaries till morale improves around here"? In this world of declining revenues I know things are tight. But without the best and brightest working for you there is little chance of your success in the long term. You don't have to give huge raises to everyone on staff, just the ones that make a difference in the overall success of your operation. Is that less than a few people? you may have another problem. Have a great weekend!

All this week we are discussing, "expenses I would like to see return to radio stations." I can't imagine how in this day of media noise how it can be expected to achieve a successful product launch with little or no marketing? Yet, in radio, we do it every day. Unrealistic budgets drawn from the expectation that listeners are going to "discover me." In 2008, it's just not happening. Hint, it's not happening unless you have the only station in the market.

All this week we are discussing, "expenses I would like to see return to radio stations." Here's a question, does anyone do research before changing a format anymore? Perhaps, before we flip, it might be a good idea to ask the audience if there is an opportunity for success. Too many format changes are being done without any analyses or targeting. We are also losing a generation that even knows how to interpret research. Research dollars would be well spent returning to this tactic.

All this week we are discussing, "expenses I would like to see return to radio stations." Let's talk a bit about copywriting. With revenues down this year we can ill afford to run bad copy that does not produce results. I'm not sure when it became a good idea for sales people to write copy but it may be one of the least bright ideas to come along since consolidation. Can you imagine sales people at car dealers writing the copy for their radio and TV ads? Someone at the station has to care about copy in order to make it compelling enough to be effective. This is one area that needs an overhaul.

June 2008 revenues are down 9%, the worst in over 10 years. This week I would like to discuss change, no, not the Obama type campaign slogan, we're talking the change that may be necessary, no matter how painful in order to get our industry back on track. We have more competition every day, yet it seems all we are still doing is cutting!
As Tom Petty sang, "Let's turn this car around." All this week we are going to discuss "expenses I would like to see return to radio stations." Starting tomorrow, here on Allaccess.com.
