Leaving to take a job across the street? This week, we have discussed the "art" of the resignation. If you are planning on working for the cluster across the street, remember how you would feel if it happened to you. Take the high road. They may show you the door, but don't get into all the reasons you are leaving. It doesn't matter. Leave right away, take nothing, praise the staff, offer to assist in the transition (not that they would let you) and leave quietly. The war will continue for years. Let your frustration to "take this job and shove it!" manifest itself in what comes out of the speakers, not your mouth.

Leaving to take a job across the street? This week, we are discussing the "art" of the resignation. If you are taking a bunch of your current staff, make sure they each follow this week's rules. (See Monday thru Wednesday.) Also, it should be of their own free will. Do not coerce them. It could land a lawsuit on your new, clean, desk. Tomorrow, leave with class.

If you don't have an employment agreement, can you cross the street without risk? Most experts (lawyers) say yes. But that won't prevent the company you're leaving from taking action against you. Make sure you take NOTHING with you. If you're present company thinks you are taking files, they will go after you. Take only one thing with you, your pix of the family on your desk. Leave everything else there. Tomorrow, can you take staff?

Leaving to take a job across the street? Make it worth your while. Leave for the right reasons. Assume you are receiving the typical 2-3% raise each year at your current job. What to cross the street for? Most experts say, don't consider for less than 10%. Crossing the street involves risk. If it's more than just the money; make sure you understand what else is involved. Tomorrow, we will look at it from the GM perspective.
