Letting someone go for performance is neither pleasant nor cheap. Make sure you have a paper trail on anyone being let go. Know the rules on constructive dismissal. Then "get it done" with poise and empathy. Make sure your business manager is in the room with you, and leave the terminated employee with dignity. Have a great weekend!

Have you checked the Public File recently? It's one of those things that gets overlooked. Check it. Make sure you have everything from legal. Posted openings and outreach updated? Any FCC permits ... letters from listeners (the good ones and bad) or ascertainment meetings? It all must be there.

Is there a club policy for your staff? Late-night remotes can be worrisome. Avoid problems with your "street team" by making sure they know the rules on drinking, socializing with listeners, and use of company vehicles. This is another area where you are never too far away from expensive litigation. Have a firm policy, review it with your PD(s), and consult your lawyer if necessary.

Another sexual harassment filing today is in the news today. As a manager it is almost amazing that this continues to go on in radio in 2008. Yet it is never too early to be cautious. If you have "the video" from corporate, perhaps it's time for a review. If not, make sure your policy is re-stated.

With the news about a major company canceling Arbitron effective January 1st, it reminded me of the past contract issues with ratings companies from time to time. Can you sell without ratings? Preparing for life without "the book" is a good way to boost the bottom line if your sales department is on the ball. Don't wait until the contract expires. Start selling without them now. Your future pacing over the next six months will dictate how it's going to go after the numbers (and contract) disappear.
