I just read a fact that Fox is reporting that Super Bowl ads for this year's Big Game are at 90% sold. That means, more than four months before the event, they only have 10% of inventory left.
First, you gotta wonder if they are saying that knowing they "really do have more" and are attempting to spur sales.
Or, are they sending a signal to big advertisers that if you want in, you better move quickly.
Regardless, I like the "marketing" of this. I don't think we do that enough. At one of my stations, we came up with an opportunity for a client to have a program that involved a major Grammy-winning artist, including the opportunity to meet this person backstage, take pics, all of it. We pre-sold it before it was available by having our A's "leak" that info to three key advertisers each. Then, three days later, we sent the package to each of them and what resulted was almost a bidding war. We sold it to three advertisers and told the ones we had to "turn away" that we have something equally as good coming in a couple weeks.
Between you and me, I don't know what that is yet, but the moral of the story is, do a little sales marketing every once in a while. Like Fox with the Super Bowl, and our little package, it can work for you too!
