Distimo, a Dutch company that helps consumer brands and others with their mobile app strategies, has produced an interesting analysis of app stores. Specifically, they wanted to look past the sheer number of apps offered by the App Store and the Android Marketplace and provide some context to the competition in the form of quality vs. quantity. The headline is that Android is creating fewer blockbuster apps than Apple. Here are some of their findings:
- 6 paid App Store apps have been downloaded over 500,000 times vs. only 2 such apps for Android.
- Android users are more likely to download free apps; Apple has a higher percentage of paid apps
- 20% of free apps and 80% of paid apps have been downloaded fewer than 100 times
- 10 paid App Store games have been downloaded over 250,000 times, while only 5 paid Android games have reached that threshold
