ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers, the international agency that determines Internet domain names has agreed to open up the naming system and allow a lot more customization. Instead of domains ending in .com, .org,. gov, .tv, etc. (not counting variations ending in a code for a specific country), website owner will be able to use .food, .sports, etc.
The catch is that a new domain (the part after the dot) will cost $185,000. Furthermore, the only entities that can apply for one are those deemed to be “established public or private organizations.” Also, all applicants must prove they have the technical capability necessary to keep a domain running. Currently, there are 22 domains available, with 14 of them having been added since 2000.
