Juniper Research says that mobile payments using NFC (Near Field Communications) will hit $50 billion worldwide by 2014. Mobile payments got a head start in parts of Asia and Europe, but the US has been slow to adopt it. But now, with giants like Google, Visa and (reportedly) Apple getting into the mix, NFC is expected to take off in North America, too. By 2014 Juniper expects the US and Western Europe to surpass Asia in this area.
