Time Warner has announced a special promotion that offers some subscribers a free Slingbox. Customers who subscribe to Time Warner’s $99/month Wideband Internet service will receive the free Slingbox. Slingbox allows a pay TV subscriber to view his/her programming from anywhere the subscriber has Internet access. The Slingbox connects to the user’s video source (set-top box, DVR, etc.) and internet connection, setting up a password-protected connection to that video source. We’ve used the Slingbox for years to do everything from watching the Super Bowl live from another continent to viewing programming of TV clients in other countries from our office in California.
This is the latest move by Time Warner to make its programming options more flexible to its subscribers. Earlier this year Time Warner released an app to allow subscribers to view their programming from any where in their homes (not just on a TV connected by a set-top box). However, many program producers balked at the move, and Time Warner is still trying to resolve the issue.
