Over the last half century baseball has lost its unofficial claim to being “The National Pasttime” to football, in particular, to the NFL. However, with respect to new media, baseball is king. Through its digital arm, Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), baseball has been at the forefront of digital initiatives. The latest is an agreement to allow MLB games to be streamed live on airplanes.
The LA Times reports that MLBAM has reached an agreement with Row 44 Inc., a California company which is installing Wi-Fi systems in all Southwest Airlines planes. Row 44’s system utilizes Hughes Network Systems to access the Internet. The deal with MLB will make all games available for streaming to passengers who sign up for the service.
MLBAM has been the most aggressive of all the major sports entities in developing new technologies and in increasing distribution. In fact, MLBAM’s systems power websites and streaming services for several other major sports. The annual MLB At Bat mobile apps (priced at $15 each) are among the highest generating sports and entertainment-related apps.
