Normally, as a website - or anything else - becomes more popular, the average time spent with it declines. This I due to the fact that many of the latecomers are more casual users, rather than the fanatics that often make up early adopters. So far, this has not been the case with Facebook. Even as Facebook has continued to increase its US online penetration, its share of time spent online continues to grow.
In the third quarter of this year, Facebook’s share of US time spent online was 16%, up from about 10% the year before! And this was before Facebook announced its new Timelines features, including the music integration with Spotify and others. Among other Internet giants, Google also managed to increase time spent, but just incrementally. Check out this chart from Silicon Alley Insider.
