The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) has released its semi-annual numbers for newspaper circulation. The ABC publishes number for 6-month periods. The latest figures cover the period from March 1st to September 30th, 2011. The top line results show the top 25 papers in terms of daily circulation. Of those 25, 16 showed decreases from the previous period, while 9 went up.
The big news was the increase by the New York Times. The Gray Lady’s circulation jumped from 916,000 to 1,150,000. This coincides with the Times decision to erect a partial paywall. This is sure to be touted by other papers that are about to - or are considering - erecting their own paywalls. Curiously, 2 of the other 9 papers to show an increase are also New York papers: The New York Daily News and Newsday. The only metropolitan New York paper in the top 25 that did not increase was The New York Post.
