Battle of the Mobile Phones

Recently, Samsung got a lot of press for achieving the milestone of becoming the world’s leading mobile handset maker. Samsung shipped almost 28 million handsets - smartphones and otherwise - in the 3rd quarter of this year. Meanwhile, Google’s Android OS is the leading OS for smartphones, having blown past Apple’s iOS in the 4th quarter of last year.

But where it really counts, profitability, Apple is till the comfortable leader. In fact, it’s not particularly close in this regard. According to a chart put together by Silicon Alley Insider, Apple makes 52% of the profits among mobile phone manufacturers, despite having just a 2% share of the entire mobile phone market by volume.
