NBC recently announced its plans for London Olympics coverage. This summer they will air the games on 3 of their channels - CNBC, MSNBC, and BRAVO. They have also announced that for the first time ever, all events will be streamed by NBC online via YouTube. The only hitch is that customers will have to prove that they pay for TV service to gain access, a now-common practice known as authentication.
It will be interesting to see how NBC uses this digital technology to address two major challenges. First, there's the time difference. London is 5 hours ahead of Eastern time and 8 hours ahead of Pacific time. NBC, as is its custom, will time shift the most popular events and air them in prime time in the US. But, as they did 4 years ago from Beijing, NBC will also make the events available live, online, to those viewers who are motivated to see the action as it happens. And like BBC, all live-streams will be available on mobile devices. The second challenge is Spanish language coverage. NBC Universal's Telemundo network <http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/05/14/nbc-universal-announces-its-most-extensive-spanish-language-olympic-coverage-ever/134120/> is gearing up to provide over 200 hours of 360° coverage across its various platforms.
