News came out earlier this week that, according to one website metrics firm, Google's Chrome web browser has surpassed Microsoft's venerable Internet Explorer in usage. According to StatCounter, over this past weekend, Google Chrome passed IE in routing more Internet traffic. According to CNN's story, not all other web metrics firms agree that Chrome has surpassed IE, but it's clear that it's a close battle. Whether or not Chrome has officially surpassed IE – and who knows if this will hold up – it's a milestone. Internet Explorer has been the dominant browser since sometime in the late '90s when it passed Netscape, not long after Microsoft started to build IE into its Windows operating system. It's estimated that IE peaked at about a 95% share of the browser market between 2002 and 2004.
