NMPA Targets Unlicensed Lyric Sites

This week the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) sent take-down notices to around 50 lyrics sites they believe to be unlicensed, demanding that they either remove copyrighted lyrics or take the proper steps to obtain licenses for the lyrics. One of the more notable sites targeted by the NMPA was Rap Genius, a heavily invested in start-up which annotates and interprets lyrics. According to Billboard, NMPA chief David Israelite has said that "the take-down notices are a precursor to filing copyright infringement lawsuits against sites that continue to publish song lyrics that they don't have the licenses to."
