It was reported this week that livestream pioneer Meerkat, which was the first app to ever allow users to use mobile to broadcast livestreams to followers (who could comment in realtime), is beginning to pivot away from livestreaming in the hopes of becoming more of a "video social network". Meerkat, which launched in 2015, has never been able to keep up with the success of competitor Periscope - and this is likely a large reason for the pivot in business strategy. According to Mashable, Meerkat's app will likely evolve into an interface "more like Google Hangouts/Skype, wherein its about smaller group chats rather than livestreaming to strangers."
