An ongoing study published this week by Edison has shed some interesting light on the shift to smartphones and its potential impact on online radio. According to the Share of Ear and Infinite Dial consumer surveys, there is a direct correlation between an increase in smartphone adoption and an increase in online radio listening, and about 19% of all time spent listening to audio is on smartphones (compared to 51% spent on radio receivers). But analysts are worried about the impact that this shift in listening habits might affect traditional radio, because only 9% of smartphone listening time is spent on AM/FM radio, and the rest is accounted for by rising formats like streaming and podcasting.
