A new study released by Bernstein Research this week has revealed that despite the massive amount of content available on the popular video site, about 93% of views on YouTube go to only 1% of channels. This will probably come as no surprise to most content creators on the site, but the statistic essentially confirms that unless you manage to crack that 1%, it's very difficult to make a living on royalties from YouTube. According the study, "there are roughly 2 billion total videos on YouTube that have been watched a total of 39 trillion times, totaling 196 trillion minutes (or 400 million years) of time spent" - which means that anyone not in the top % received about 3 trillion out of the 196 trillion views.
