Netflix's plan to distribute movies on both their streaming platform and theaters simultaneously has raised concerns and tensions between the streaming video giant and cinema trade groups. The controversy was recently re-raised this week with confirmation of a new deal between Netflix and luxury exhibitor iPic, which would allow iPicto screen Netflix's upcoming original movies in its 15 high-end locations, including New York and Los Angeles. The National Association of Theater owners has long taken issue with simultaneous home/theater releases, which they view "as a threat to the traditional theatrical window that gives cinemas the exclusive rights to show new movies before they become available for home viewing."
