It was reported this week that Viacom may be willing to make an all-cash deal to buy Scripps Networks - who own channels like HGTV, Food Network, and Travel Channel. Another big media company, Discovery Communications is also said to be in negotiations to buy Scripps as well... which industry leaders believe could sell for as much as 10.6 billion and has the potential to transform either company's programming. According to Variety though, the CEO's of both companies (Bob Bakish @ Viacom + David Zaslav @ Discover) likely have very different plans for Scripps' channels, stating that "Zaslav wants to add HGTV, Food Network and the rest to his cache of non-fiction channels like Discovery, Investigation Discovery and Science Channel. Bakish, meanwhile, sees a chance to stretch Viacom's portfolio, which is heavy in youth-skewing outlets like MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon."
