Many Popular YouTube Clips Still Lack Ads
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Google doesn't release financial figures for YouTube, but others have tracked its performance as closely as possible from outside. The Wall Street Journal <http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090812/youtubes-most-popular-clips-still-mostly-ad-free/> reports that video tracking service TubeMogul has been monitoring the monetization of the most popular videos. TubeMogul categorized the top 100 most-viewed videos into the following 4 categories:
- Partner/Professional 36.3%
- Pirated 31.3%
- User generated 23.1%
- Ads 4.5%
Then they analyzed the number of each that contained paid ads. According to Tube Mogul, all of the partner/professional clips have ads, as do a small percentage of the UGC videos. The total comes out to just 36.7% of the most popular videos have been monetized. Presumably, that figure falls dramatically the further down the tail you go.
Newspapers On the Web
Monday, August 31, 2009
The Newspaper Association of America <http://www.naa.org/PressCenter/SearchPressReleases/2009/NEWSPAPER-WEB-SITES-ATTRACT-MORE-THAN-70-MILLION-VISITORS.aspx> recently reported that newspaper websites attracted 36% of all Internet users in June 2009, proving again that the news is more important than ever, even if the traditional newspaper business model is dying. Clearly, the newspaper brands are strong and vital, while their balance sheets continue to hemorrhage red ink. The site stats for the papers included a total of more than 3.5 billion pageviews and the fact that users returned an average of 8 times during the month.
On the other hand, Nielsen data from May of this year showed that the average time spent on newspaper sites went down for 17 of the top 30 papers, as compared with May 2008. According to The Business Insider <http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-time-spent-on-newspaper-websites-2009-6> , the Wall Street Journal showed the biggest decline among the top 4 sites.
