Comcast has received an avalanche of press about its promise acquisition of NBC Universal. Compared to that transaction, another recent decision has largely flown under the radar. That move is the launch of Comcast's new online on-demand service, called Xfinity. Comcast subscribers will be able to go to Xfinity.com and access programming that they subscribe to for online viewing on demand.
This is part of the larger "authentication" concept, allowing cable subscribers to access programming that they've paid for on multiple platforms. Besides the original broadcasts, DVRs and cable on demand, the Xfinity service will give viewers a chance to watch programming online. No word yet on the implication of this for mobile access.
