Beyond innovations in 3-D technologies, several other significant technologies were highlighted at this year's CES. PMG President Tommy Hadges continues his overview of those highlights:
Mobile TV was also on display, utilizing two non-compatible & competing services, pitting Qualcomm against a coalition of LG, Zenith & Harris. Qualcomm's FLO TV uses paid subscriptions to access up a bouquet of 19 channels intended primarily for mobile telephones, which are broadcast across the US on the old analog frequencies for UHF Channel 55. The other group uses the new ATSC-M/H mobile digital standard that can be broadcast for free by DTV stations.
Both groups showed players with clear (though certainly not HD images) that supposedly are immune to interference when used in moving vehicles. Mophie was demonstrating a combination external battery & FLO-TV receiver that would provide access for that service to users of both the iPhone & the iTouch, while Cydle displayed a similar product for viewing the ATSC broadcasts on smartphones.
