Apple's new iPad does indeed look like an overgrown iPhone. It has the same touch screen interface of the iPhone, with the virtual keyboard, accelerometer and most of the other features. Most of the apps that run on the iPhone will run on the iPad and Apple has made it easy for developers to start creating new apps designed to exploit the larger size of the iPad.
Tablet computers have traditionally been viewed as being underpowered laptops and oversized PDAs. In effect, the iPad attempts to combine at least 3 devices: an e-book reader, an iPod, and a netbook computer. To put the iPad into perspective with those other devices, here's a chart that compares their key specs:
Device Starting Price Screen Size Dimensions (inches) Weight (lbs) Apple iPad $499 9.7" 9.56 x 7.47 x .5 1.5 Acer Aspire One Netbook $275 8.9" 9.8 x 6.7 x 1.1 2.18 Amazon Kindle DX $489 9.7" 8 x 5.3 x .36 .64 Apple iPhone 3GS $199 3.5" 4.5 x 2.4 x .48 .3 -
