YouTube is now serving ads on some videos accessed from the mobile version of its site. Users in the US and Japan are being served banner ads from the YouTube home search and browse pages from its mobile sites. This is essential tog rowing revenue as YouTube's mobile usage grew by 160% in 2009 and observers expect growth to be just as robust this year.
YouTube may be ubiquitous, but it accounts for only a fraction of parent company Google's annual revenue. As mentioned previously, only a fraction of all YouTube videos carry ads on them. In fact, less than half of the 100 most-viewed videos on YouTube carry ads.
