Nintendo Enters 3D World

Nintendo DS is still the dominant portable gaming platform, despite the inroads made by the iPhone. But the company is about to up the ante with a 3D version of the DS system. The 3D model is expected to be rolled out at the gaming industry's big convention, the E3, in June. However, Nintendo has not announced when the unit will go on sale other than to say it will be released sometime in their next fiscal year, which falls between April 1st of this year and March 31st of 2011.

Nintendo also declined to discuss price or the specific 3D technology being used. However, they did make a point of saying that the system will not require games to wear special 3D glasses. Nintendo is the first gaming platform to announce a 3D model. Earlier this year, a number of TV manufacturers announced their intention to sell 3D TVs, and Hitachi has released a 3D-enabled cell phone.
