Major movie studios continue to cut back on traditional forms of advertising, many times eschewing TV and billboard campaigns in terms of social networking and viral campaigns. Yahoo reports <http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100408/film_nm/us_hollywood_marketing> that studio ad budgets dropped 3% in 2008 and went down another 8% in 2009. A major reason for the shift is, of course, cost cutting, but there's also a strong feeling that new marketing techniques work!
You'll still see plenty of trailers for upcoming moves on TV, but you're more likely to see them in different places than you used to. YouTube, Twitter and Facebook are the 3 magic words in the world of movie marketing these days. In fact, Disney is in the process of hiring a new marketing director and it's strongly suspected that he or she will come from outside of the traditional film business.
