With 3D TV about to become a reality, market research firm, Generator Research has issued a projection <http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2010/04/14/report-global-3d-tv-market-be-worth-17-billion-2014> for the market. Generator believes that it will be a $17 billion industry by 2014. Their projections say that 39% of all TVs sold in 2014 will be capable of receiving 3D. The reason for this aggressive projection is that, according to Generator, the cost of stepping up existing digital TVs to be ready for 3D is a lot lower than the step-up costs of moving from analog to digital/HD.
At the same time, the enormous popularity of 3D movies has created the potential for a much bigger market. Production of 3D movies is rapidly expanding. There were 20 major 3D releases in 2009 and over 50 are planned for this year. Finally, sporting events are shaping up to be important drivers of 3D technologies, with networks like ESPN already making a big investment in the technology.
