ATG, a research company, conducted a survey of mobile phones users <http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-research-and-purchases-on-mobile-devices-2010-4?utm_source=Triggermail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=SAI_COTD_041610#ixzz0lZ2BhlQh> recently that showed how far the mobile industry has to go before making mobile commerce a reality. According to ATG's survey of 1054 people, 87% of users said that they had never purchased anything with their mobile device and 73% of users had never even used their mobile devices to research purchases.
Presumably, this will be changing rapidly as smartphones become even more common. Currently, they make up just over 20% of the mobile phone market. Despite this low figure, mobile advertising has been building steam across the world. While it makes up a tiny fraction of the advertising market, innovations such as location-based services will continue to drive mobile marketing in the near future.
