Public broadcasters in television and radio have joined forces to launch a new media site, Public Media Platform <http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/06/public-media-joins-forces-for-one-big-platform/> . The partners are PBS, NPR, American Public Media, Public Radio International and Public Radio Exchange. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is also kicking in $1 million to become a part of the venture.
The idea is to allow all of these organizations to work together to share content, increasing the material available to affiliate stations, as well as making it easier for the group to sell content to 3rd parties. Therefore, the platform is a backend operation. Consumers will see the benefit not by going to a common site but through increased content on and off-air from their local affiliates.
