CNET broke the news <http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-20007673-261.html> that the long-rumored Google music service could be ready to rollout this fall. Google apparently feels that to compete fully with Apple in the smartphone market, they have to have their own music service for the Android operating system, as Apple complements the iPhone with iTunes. Google sees several advantages in such a service:
- Theirs would likely be a cloud-based service, unlike iTunes which is tethered to the users' computers.
- The 4 major labels would love for Apple to have another major competitor in the digital music space.
- Google has a natural vehicle to promote a music service by directing music search results to the new Google Music system.
