Several weeks ago Google demonstrated a new way of buying and syncing music and apps when rolling out their latest Android OS. This is likely the backbone of the proposed new Google music service <http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/05/google-apple-music/> . One key feature is that users could purchase a song or an app on their computer and have it automatically added to their Android device, without having to physically connect the two devices.
Another advance is that a user's existing music library, once identified on his/her computer, would be mirrored in the cloud, to make syncing seamless. Apple is rumored to be working on adding the same cloud-based functionality in iTunes, using technology and licensing it picked up when it acquired Lala.
