Back in the '70s, some artists released their albums in 4-channel mixes described as "quadraphonic sound" by the record companies. This vinyl & tape phenomenon didn't last long, but Rhino Records has now re-released the first album by Chicago (when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority) in an Audio DVD format that reproduces the original 4-channel mix using either Dolby Digital or DTS. The system works perfectly, allowing anyone with a TV surround system to hear the sometimes crude, but sometimes magical, depth of these ground-breaking mixes. It's so much fun listening to songs like "Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is" or "Beginnings" in their original quad versions, we hope that Rhino will be encouraged to release more classic albums in this technologically modern format.
