Google's Android operating system is quickly gaining ground on the race for the top spot among smartphone platforms <http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-mobile-market-share-2010-9> worldwide. Gartner has studied the data and projected that Android will overtake Nokia's Symbian system in 2014. In fact, Android is the only one of the big 5 operating systems that is expected to increase in market share over the next 3 years.
According to Gartner's forecast, RIM's Blackberry platform is on a downward trajectory that's almost as steep as Nokia's. Meanwhile Apple's iOS is projected to remain relatively flat through 2014. Interestingly, Windows Mobile platform is expected to remain in 5th place globally, even though Microsoft is scheduled to launch their new mobile platform later this year, and they've proven with Bing and Windows 7 that they are fully capable of successfully redesigning a platform and putting enormous marketing muscle behind it.
