Nokia's troubles have already been documented elsewhere. The company, whose profits towered above most of the rest of the industry just 3 years ago, has seen a steep decline since then, just as its market share started its steep decline. Nokia's profit stood at $3.8 billion in 2007. What was significant about 2007? That's the summer when Apple introduced the first iPhone.
Apple, of course, makes many more products than smartphones, but the competition from the iPhone was a game changer for all mobile manufacturers. Silicon Alley Insider <http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-income-for-apple-nokia-motorola-rim-2010-9> has put together a chart comparing Nokia's profitability to other makers of mobile handsets. Apple, then RIM, both passed Nokia in profitability in 2008. Now, Motorola is about to do the same.
