Rumors started to circulate in early December about Apple's plans for a 2nd generation iPad. The Wall Street Journal got word from component makers in China and Taiwan that Apple had placed an order for parts for a new version of the iPad, possibly to ship as early as February. The rumors were fueled by Apple's iPad price cut in late November, a possible sign that they are trying to reduce inventories in anticipation of the next gen iPad.
Competition in the tablet space has increased rapidly as other manufacturers have jumped into the field. Apple's plans to stay on top include new innovations to the iPad. Two specifically discussed enhancements are a front-facing camera (to facilitate technologies such as Skype) and chips that will allow the 3G version to be a truly world iPad. That means iPads that will run on the CDMA 3G technology, not just the GSM 3G technology that the current iPads use.
