PMG President Tommy Hadges has just returned from his annual visit to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, providing us with his overview. What better way to start the New Year than visiting the CES in Las Vegas? There were slightly more attendees than last year (126,000, compared to 120,000 in 2010) & once again there were enough interesting & innovative products to make it worth putting up with all of the crowding, pushing & shoving in the hallways & display halls.
In TV, most manufacturers displayed flat panels capable of some kind of Internet connectivity, using proprietary on-screen apps or existing platforms like Yahoo’s Connected TV, through either wired Ethernet or WiFi connections. Like last year, 3D was also being heavily stressed, with most companies still showing sets that required battery-powered, relatively heavy (& expensive) active-shutter glasses, which alternate closing one eye at a time, thus allowing the brain to compose a three-dimensional image.
