At the recent 38th annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference various industry figures talked about the state of television viewing, specifically with the growth of the phenomenon of cord cutting, where consumers eliminate cable or satellite service in favor of Internet-online viewing. According to these experts, this process is happening slowly, if at all.
Nielsen’s numbers from 2009 show that 98.3% of viewing takes place over a TV set, while 1.7% was online. These numbers will change and become blurred as more Internet-enabled TVs and other devices enter the mainstream.
In fact, experts in the TV industry say that an opposite phenomenon, full connectivity, is growing much faster than cord cutting. Full connectivity is households that have cable or satellite and broadband service. 50% of all households are now fully connected, according to industry sources. And 76% of fully connected households have DVRs.
