On several occasions recently we’ve detailed some of the challenges that Facebook faces in trying to generate per-user revenue commensurate with its status as the #1 online ad server. Still, even though it may not be getting the same rates as other major sites, Facebook’s sheer size puts it up near the top. eMarketer estimates that Facebook serves 25% of all display ads, but it collects just 5% of U.S. online ad revenue. Here are the relevant figures from eMarketer’s study:
- $25.8 billion - Total U.S. online ad revenue in 2010
- $1.86 billion - Facebook’s total ad revenue for 2010
- $1.21 billion - Facebook’s U.S. ad revenue in 2010
- 4.7% - Facebook’s share of U.S. online revenue for 2010
By 2010, according to eMarketer’s projections, Facebook’s online revenue will more than double, but its share of the U.S. online ad market will be just 8.8%.
