AT&T is about to become the first major U.S. mobile carrier to target users by location using text messages. ShopAlerts is the new AT&T service, powered by Placecast. Users who opt in will receive offers from various companies when they enter a virtual “geo-fence” area. Initially, the service will be offered to subscribers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.
