NFC no longer refers just to the home of the reigning Super Bowl Champions. In the tech world, NFC stands for Near Field Communications, the technology that (among other things) allows users to use their mobile devices to pay for goods. NFC is similar to Blue Tooth technology, except that with NFC, the pairing between the two devices is automatic, not manual as in Blue Tooth.
NFC connections are short-distance connections, usually no more than 12-13 feet. It’s designed to make an automatic connection to make interaction between a customer and a vendor, publisher or marketer virtually seamless. Samsung and Nokia lead the way among handset manufacturers in supporting NFC. On the OS side, Google started including NFC support in its Android 2.3 update and Apple is rumored to be considering including NFC in the iPhone 5, due later this year, probably in June or July.
