Do You Believe In Magic?

When I moved to Los Angeles and first saw the Hollywood Sign, I made a promise to myself to never take it for granted. I vowed to never lose the joy and excitement of seeing that sign "for real.”
After driving past the sign, or more often sitting under it, in bumper-to-bumper traffic for over a decade, it still took my breath away. The thrill and anticipatory excitement of a glance from a new love had changed into a more reflective, deep, joyful swelling of pride for all that "we" had been through together.
Until I left Los Angeles almost three years ago to the day, whenever I caught a glimpse of it unexpectedly, I still got the magical feeling I get when I see a hummingbird.
Unexpectedly? How could a 45 ft. tall by 33 ft. wide sign sneak up on me?
Sadly, it did. Easily and often.
We get so stuck in our heads, in our lives, in our hopes, fears, and regrets and in our stories that we literally and figuratively forget where we are.
When I moved to Florida, I made a vow to myself like the one that I made looking at the Hollywood Sign so many years ago. I promised not to take for granted the magic and privilege of seeing the ocean every day.
The truth is, no matter WHERE we are, on the planet and in our lives, there are tiny miracles all around us. We just must be willing to see them.
A sunrise, a cat’s purr, an old couple holding hands, a blade of grass, a cloud, the fact that WE are here at all, is mind blowing when you stop and think about it.
Some of life’s miracles are man-made, most are not, but we also need to remember that, when we decide what to prioritize and revere.
We need to remind ourselves more often to get out of our heads and into our hearts.
"And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming". –Paul Simon
