Would it shock you to know that you don't see anything as it is? Nothing. You don't see any person object or situation without some sort of bias.
It's ok, I don't either.
No one does.
We don't even see ourselves as we are.
We can't. It's impossible.
We all see the world through our own unique veil. Our veils are made up of past experiences, (good and bad), conditioning, personal preferences, familial, cultural, and societal beliefs, genetic differences and so much more.
This is what it means to be human.
No two people will ever perceive things completely the same way, because no two people have the same veil.
The key is recognizing this fact, accepting it, and even embracing it.
Life becomes a whole lot simpler and a lot more enjoyable when we realize there is no wrong or right, or black or white. Everything is a stream of neutrality made up of numerous shades of grey until we project our opinions, judgements, hopes, fears, and expectations on it.
Our ego hates this concept. Our ego hates anything that challenges the status quo and threatens to shake things up and eat away at it. You can't really blame the ego, by nature it's kind of an egomaniac.
The question becomes, what do we do with the knowledge that nothing we see in actuality, is as we see it?
The answer is nothing and everything. Nothing truly needs to be done, but this perspective shift changes everything.
It's hard to get really invested in something that isn't real once you know it isn't.
But, but, but...my thoughts are real, my opinions are real, my likes and dislikes, my morals are real!!!
But are they really? For every opinion, preference and moral you hold, there is someone who holds the exact opposite…who also believes that their way of thinking and being is also 100 percent right. You cancel each other out and are left with "what is".
My brain hurt when I started learning about and playing with this concept.
I'm human and I still fall into the "me-ness" and "right-ness" of things. The difference is now when I get caught up, or emotionally charged, I pause and question the stories I am telling myself. Our lives are just a series of stories. Once we fully get that, the veil begins to lift, the narrative shifts, and we can move forward with much more clarity and peace.
