You may have heard that the way people see us has mostly to do with them and a smaller percentage to do with us.
We all see, and are seen, through a veil of experience, preferences, and preconceived ideas.
While these statements may be accurate it doesn't mean there is no merit or truth in others' perceptions.
Self-confidence doesn't mean being dismissive of peoples point of view, observations and opinions, in order to keep our ego intact. In fact, it is just the opposite.
REAL self-confidence means, being able to hear, contemplate, and evaluate another's view point.
It means taking a step back, putting our ego aside, and considering objectively.
It means that if even a sliver of validity can be found in the others' thoughts about us, we know we will not be mortally wounded.
Being truly self-confident then allows us to incorporate their perceptions and criticisms of our actions for our own improvement, even when those perceptions sting and make our ego bristle.
Deflection comes from a weak ego. It is the opposite of reflection. Deflection says "this is all about them." Reflection says, "this may have a lot to do with them, but it also may have to do with me."
Self-confidence, self-reflection and accountability are all components of a healthy ego, and all instrumental in the equation for personal growth.
