Update on My Facebook Break

A few months ago I went on a Facebook break. I didn't know if it was temporary or permanent.
As of today, I will say it is at least temporarily permanent.
I got off of Facebook because the bickering and opinions were draining my energy.
I hesitated leaving because social media gave me a sense of connection, as I still find myself semi-lonely in a city post COVID.
I realized, however, that watching peoples carefully curated life stories in all their glory, was making me feel even more isolated.
Everyone seemingly had such happy, busy, full, fun lives. I felt like a bystander, or even worse a voyeur.
The "connection" I felt wasn't real.
At first, I'll admit, it was difficult.
I found myself feeling an empty hole. I had freed up a lot of time, but wasn't using it productively.
Within the past few weeks something changed.
I found myself hearing from people I hadn't seen or spoken to in years. Some even decades!
We actually SPOKE on the phone or through video.
Our conversations were REAL, open, honest, unfiltered and raw. We celebrated each other’s victories, and mourned each other’s losses.
I realize now, that nothing replaces real-life, real-time, connection and interaction.
For me, as of now, there is no turning back.
Considering a break? Try it. You may be surprised that instead of losing connection, you gain stronger deeper ones.
