An Important Reminder About Mental Health

Moods, thoughts and feelings both come and go if we don't get attached to them.
For people struggling with an anxiety disorder, or clinical depression however, the line is not as straightforward.
In my work as a Life Coach, and when dealing with my own emotional health issues, I have to remind myself that I'm not looking for a "cure" for a diagnosis.
Instead, dealing with mental health issues is a journey.
There are insights, practices and tools to be learned, but there is no easy button.
We may find ourselves doing well for a while, and then judge ourselves for "backsliding."
This is where we need to step back compassionately, and remind ourselves the path is not linear and that there is no final destination.
This is okay.
We need to be gentle, kind and soft with ourselves.
We also have to be mindful of who we reach out to for support.
After a celebrity’s mental health battles are brought to light, we are often bombarded with messages on social media saying, "I'm always here" or "If you’re struggling please - reach out."
Only to find that when we do reach out, that person is unavailable. Although unintentional, this can leave an already depressed or anxious person to feel even more isolated.
While the messages are well intended, the truth of the matter is, not everyone is equipped to deal with the emotional needs of others.
It is therefore important to find a consistent, reliable method of support.
That can be a therapist or support group, or in times of extreme distress places like the National Alliance on Mental Health's helpline:
1-800-950-NAMI (6264).
If you have a friend or loved one struggling with mental health issues, it is important not to make promises you may not be able to stick to.
While things like, "We'll talk later" or "I'm always available" may placate the person suffering in the moment, if not backed up, the good intention may ultimately backfire and do more harm than good.
In these cases, it may be best to find the most effective way to support your loved one by seeking help through Mental Health America: Call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org.
