Our outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world.
What we think is what we get.
In my column last week, I discussed the power of limiting beliefs.
Want to know where you are limiting yourself? Take a look around you.
So how do we start dismantling these limiting belief systems?
There are several methods. The first that I'll discuss is a Rational Emotive Behavior technique.
Rational Emotive Behavior therapy was introduced in the 1950s and is used to help us identify the negative or irrational thought patterns that affect our behavior and therefore our lives.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapists use something called the ABC
Model.
Identify the following:
- A is the (a)ctivating event that triggers negative thoughts.
- B is the false or irrational (b)elief that is formed following the activating event.
- C is the (c)onsequence that flows from the irrational thoughts.
It's helpful to write this all down. Once we get the process outside of us and on paper, it is easier to detach ourselves from the story we are telling ourselves.
When we look at the negative consequences that our irrational thoughts create, we become better equipped to challenge and change them.
Next week I'll talk about another method for dismantling our negative beliefs which involves six steps.
